This page is about door alignment and why it is important for you and is inspired by a talk with one of our clients when she told us how important door alignment is and yet not many realise. She had engaged us after engaging a few handyman and we have repaired a few door in her home over 2 trips now and she was surprise on how it is done especially after seeing the handyman struggle with simple issue.

Some common door alignment signs for you to look out for:

1. Door rubbing against something: A very obvious issue where your door all of sudden start to be hard to close. This can be due to a few issue such as hinges giving issue allowing the door to sink down on the non hinged side. Another possible reason is wood expansion or cupping (bending) especially with the hot and humid weather in Singapore.
2. Door not latching properly: When ur door level goes off, it can cause the latching of the lock to go off. Some common signs is when you got to start to pull or push to latch the door or just the digital lock to keep beeping when it could not auto latch in.
3. Bad installation work: Sometime the issue is from the start where the installation was not done properly. A common guide is the gap between the floor and door should be 5mm, side to side of the frame 4mm on each side and another 5mm to the top frame. The latch of the lock should ideally sit on the middle or upper middle of the hole in the frame.
4. Loose wood joint: for the older door or what we call classic door, the doors are pieced together by joint or imagine fitting the wood together like lego. Over time the wood can get loose and the door would start to sag down.

The above are some common wooden door closing issue that are faced by Singapore home owner. They can be your main door or room door. Wooden door frames near the toilet area can get damaged by water easily. Sometimes we do encounter door frame that are rotten near the bottom due to water damage by water over a long period of time when cleaning the floors.

Recently we were engaged to do a partial patch up work for a rotten door frame without painting. We start by removing the rotten portion which is at the bottom part of the frame with care as the rear of the door frame has tiles by the side.

After which a new portion of the frame is inserted and nailed by machine into the wall. Last but not least the gaps are covered by putty. Finally a paint is coated over (not in pictures) to cover the wood.

Some possible cause of a damaged door frame includes:

1. water damage
2. termite attack on frame
3. physical damage

For such partial replacement of damaged door frame, the area that is affected has to be limited and the end result would still not be as nice as a full replacement of door frame. 

However it is more cost effective than a replacement of the entire door frame.
